Our Region

Charters Towers

Centred around one of Australia’s most historic gold mining towns, Charters Towers is now one of Queensland’s major cattle producers, exporting its products nationally and to countries all over the world.

Northern Queensland

Charters Towers

Approximately 136 kilometres southwest of Townsville and 1,311 kilometres north of Brisbane, Charters Towers claims a long history of gold mining and now boasts significant agricultural and resources activity.

The Charters Towers Local Government looks after an area totalling 68,571 square kilometres, representing a population of almost 12,000 people. The low population density lends itself perfectly to the major agricultural and mining opportunities that make up much of the region’s economic activity, with tourism, education and research industries also contributing significantly.

Among Queensland’s largest cattle and beef producers, Charters Towers is expected to expand in the coming years as it takes advantage of opportunities for growing its primary industries. New meat processing facilities and further investments in irrigated agriculture would spur the region’s product and allow farmers to make more of the abundant water and arable land.

Renewable energy and digital economy projects are also anticipated to fuel the city’s future industrial and commercial opportunities, helping Charters Towers keep pace with increased interest in food, fodder and farms for sugar and ethanol production in the area.
