Regional voices inform MITEZ’s industrial relations submission
MITEZ has lodged a submission on the Industrial Relations and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2026, highlighting the practical implications for employers, workers and councils across the Mount Isa to Townsville corridor.
Our submission supports the Bill’s objectives, subject to targeted safeguards and practical implementation support. Its eight recommendations address workers’ compensation transparency, regional rehabilitation and medical access, fair recruitment, administrative efficiency, council employment arrangements and continuity of essential services.
Member input brings regional experience to these issues, with contributions from Mount Isa City Council, Cloncurry Shire Council, Custom Steel Fab and RRETS Group.
“Businesses investing in regional Queensland need a regulatory environment that supports growth rather than creating additional uncertainty.”
— Gavin Starr, Business Development Manager, Custom Steel Fab
“Regional councils like Cloncurry face unique challenges in managing workers’ compensation, accessing timely rehabilitation services and attracting and retaining skilled workers, making it essential that legislative reforms recognise the operational realities of remote communities.”
— Tammy Parry, Chief Executive Officer, Cloncurry Shire Council
MITEZ thanks these members for contributing their perspectives. Their input helps ensure our advocacy reflects the operating conditions, workforce needs and service responsibilities of regional Queensland.
